Simultaneous, consecutive and online interpreting

Interpreting is a fascinating profession that comes in lots of different formats:

Simultaneous interpreting is when the speaker's words are interpreted almost in real time, most commonly at conferences and international meetings. Depending on the situation, the interpreter will use either a soundproof booth, tour guide system or specialist online platform. 

Whispered interpreting (or chuchotage) is a type of simultaneous interpreting, most often used in court proceedings, where the interpreter whispers their interpretation of the speaker's words.

Consecutive interpreting is when the interpreter listens to a longer segment of speech and then interprets this with the help of notes made using specialist note-taking techniques. This type of interpreting is well suited to after-dinner speeches, ceremonial addresses, negotiations and site tours. 



Liaison interpreting is a type of consecutive interpreting where shorter passages are interpreted in a conversation-like format, usually without any notes. It can be very helpful in facilitating negotiations and technical discussions.
